To those who are frustrated by MMO “Greed”
Look. This is a CLASSIC of this sub genre. If you are familiar with the Star Wars Game of Heroes (aka, SWGoH,) a game that has spawned an AWESOMELY active, competitive audience, dozens and dozens of ACTIVE YouTube channels (from beginner “Explainers,” to continuing updates on game updates, changes, character roster combinations, and even MORE esoteric subjects such as the best character combinations, at various player and/or Guild levels within the game, to more successfully compete at any and levels of skill, monetary investment, time investment, STUDY investment.. in the game’s several and highly varied PVP modes.
Characters are known as cartoons, or just ‘toons for short. SEVERAL, highly evolved websites, discord server channels, and reddit pages that amount to web-based tools and complex calculators to, for on instance, figure and CONfigure the most competitive and synergistic arrangements of squads for say, creating the highest possible damage score contribution to a given stage, at a specific level, of the MULTIPLE Guild raids offered, in order to educate “paid players,” OR “F2P (Free To Play..)” players about how EACH TYPE OF PLAYER, NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF MONETARY INVESTMENT IN THE GAME THEY MAY BE EITHER WILLING OR ABLE TO MAKE, can maximize THEIR individual contribution to a group effort in overcoming steadily more difficult challenges that all players IN A GIVEN GUILD benefit (aka LOOT, lol) equally from.
This is to say, the developers, and the investors that stand behind them, need love too.
As with SWGoH, Marvel Strike Force is among the “best of breed” in these type games. And as with ALL good “F2P” games, the game can be enjoyed and engaging SPENDING ZIP ZERO NOTHING on it. In fact, there are A LOT of long time, loyal players that take great pride in advancing their position, both personally and as a proud, contributing member of their Guild.
Spending money can VASTLY speed your travels to the highest ranks in the game, allowing entre’ SOONER, should such be your goal, to the most powerful, most competitive, and most rewarding in terms of LOOT, Guilds in the game. BUT!!! The player willing and able to spend the time IN GAME can (in general..) get to the same place - for free. It simply requires a greater investment of TIME in place of MONEY. But then, as with most other trades and choices society requires the individual to make - time or money. After all, so the saying goes, “Time IS Money.”
These gams are HIGHLY REWARDING to the specific player audience that seeks them out. They are complex, tactical, strategic, thought-provoking, and long-term. They are NOT for everybody, nor are they intended to be.
But for those who are competitive (or frankly, even casual, if the player is prepared for and UNDERSTANDS AND APPRECIATES the long-term, Guild focused, SERIOUS experience that MSF [Marvel Strike Force,] as well as SWGoH, an EXTREMELY SIMILAR IN STYLE AND PRESENTATION, understanding SWGoH represents a much larger and longer installed player base, a more highly and deeply developed game with BOTH providing EXCELLENT and highly similar gaming [meant as a GOOD THING, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BOTH GAMES to the interested player..]
These games are NOT examples, and of which there are MANY, GREAT OPTIONS from which the no less serious gamer who prefers a more “Quick Twitch,” First Person Shooter [FPS], Third Person Shooter, Tower Defense [TD], or Real-Time Strategy [RTS].
They are FAR more in line with the game preferences found in the less twitchy, GENERALLY more cerebral and slower paced, Role-Playing Games [RPGs], Turn-Based Stategy [TBS], and Grand Strategy genres (think Civilization, or the many, MANY Paradox developed PC games.)
But MOST PARTICULARLY, though the GORGEOUS, COMPLEX graphics, various and highly varied game modes, and what in the end keeps these games interesting, and players engaged long-term, the ever more involved and complex Guild vs Guild mechanics make them ALMOST indistinguishable from their roots, they are at base, highly polished and evolved Collectible Card Games [CCGs,] the classic example being the VERY long lived, Magic, The Gathering CCG.
As such, the point of the game is THE GAMEPLAY, the strategy involved, and the never-ending, open-ended nature of the game. The PROCESS. The GRIND. The incremental but steady rewards awaiting players with patience and a proper SPAN OF ATTENTION. If the player is looking for a short term, twitchy-paced experience, look elsewhere. This is not your game.
But for the player INTENDING a long-term investment in TIME, UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE of GRIND, APPRECIATIVE of complexity and involvement OVER TIME, I can hardly recommend these games more highly. And frankly, ESPECIALLY given the shift in ALL mobile gaming more towards this type of highly developed, polished, F2P business model that is NOT LIKELY TO CHANGE ANYTIME SOON.. get onboard and pick A FEW games you REALLY ENJOY, and enjoy the ride.
NOTE TO DEVS OF MSF: One area I AGREE with the criticism inherent in the term “greed,” is the need to reduce the number of “pop up opportunities.” They are distracting and DO detract from an EXCELLENT game. We, the community, understand there is a place for “offers,” but leave them in their place for those who can or are willing to pay the freight. The pop ups are fine, but make them very much fewer and less often “offered,” and ONLY offer the very best of the best, and make them the “cheap” ones (no more than say, $4.99, and no less than say, a 60% discount over regular. OR, when they are DIRECTLY involved in building a time sensitive squad relating to an Event happening relatively soon.) I actually DO spend a good bit on the game, as I spend several hours a day enjoying the fruits of your hard work, but I ONLY buy relatively cheap offers, that offer DEEP discounts. Pop ups are NOT for whales. Whales can and will spend as they wish, and the ENDLESS stream of pop ups is annoying to all who play. Lower the intensity
