  • App is great ...

The app itself is very easy to use. If there is a problem with the app, there is no way to contact the app developers to report problems. Today I found out the verbal response portion of the app is not working. I say something and the app looks like it is thinking and never came back saying the answer is wrong or correct. It just sits there spinning. I had to get out of the lesson I was on and restart all because it stopped working. All I planned to do was to put in a regular trouble call but there is no way to do it in the app or if you look it up in Apple Store and click on Support. So the only way I have left is to write a review to tell about a problem.
  • This app is making me learn French

It is easy to use and prompts you to keep going. Learning a language is hard, it takes time, and it’s frustrating at times. With the proper self-motivation, the app’s challenges, and the healthy competition that it promotes, I find that Duolingo is a great tool to achieve your goals. I am halfway the French course. I can read basic French. I can go through a news article and understand most of the content. I can’t speak and I barely understand it when it’s spoken. I believe that with this app I will be able to read at a decent level, speak basic sentences, and then be able to pursue other methods to complete my learning.
  • Ultimately disappointing....

...If you expect free and fun learning. They’ve switched the format to a video game with limited lives. Once you get past the “Bonjour, Paul!” Stage you will have to pay to move on. Better to just start with Rosetta Stone which doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Two thumbs down!

  • It can be enjoyable when they stop allowing cheating

I have learned almost 500 words and have placed in the top three a few times. As the lessons become more difficult, I have noticed that small misspelled mistakes are marked wrong more frequently, which is disheartening. The quality and speed of the voices you have to interpret are not that great, and when you slow it down, it’s insulting in a funny way. The worst part is that towards the end of the week, people start cheating to remain ahead of you on the board. They add languages, take all stories, and no lessons, etc. Another thing that bothers me is that when you take a progress quiz, words that you haven’t even studied are given to you. So there’s no real way to measure your progress. Update: Duolingo is terrible at explanations, they leave it up to the people learning to explain the inconsistencies, and it gets worse as you advance. Get a basic understanding of whatever language or languages you’re studying, and pay to learn from a reputable source. Trust me, you’re going to get very frustrated.

  • New Heart System Discourages Learning

    By B3hr057
I used to use Duolingo a lot (over 30k XP) but the new heart system means make a mistake and you have to pay to keep going. Learning a language involves making mistakes and you are punished for it now rather than encouraged to keep trying. The old version was better, I could practice for an hour every day. Now I don’t even bother logging on to do the lessons it’s kind of depressing. Another app gone to “PTW”. Looking for a different resource now.
